Detailed walkthrough — what a session looks like
The flow from landing on the page to having a coaching report in hand:
Step 1: Upload your resume + JD
From the dashboard, click New interview. You see a form with three areas: role title, job description, resume. PDF upload or paste-as-text both work. The first time, you will type or paste; after that, the document library remembers your resume so you only need to provide the JD for each new role you are practising for.
You also pick the difficulty (easy, medium, hard, brutal — the names mean what they say), the interviewer voice (alloy, onyx, nova, echo, shimmer — pick the one whose pacing you like), the target session duration in minutes, and the target number of questions. A typical session is 20–30 minutes and 5–8 questions. A deep dive can be 60 minutes and 10–12 questions. A quick warm-up can be 5 minutes and 2 questions.
If you have set up a preset for a specific role (FAANG-style SWE, system-design-only, behavioral-only), you can pick it from the preset picker and skip most of the form.
Step 2: Click start, talk out loud
After clicking start, you land on the live session page. The interviewer greets you by referencing the role and your background, then asks the first question. You see the orb pulse to indicate it is speaking. When it is done, the orb turns to listening mode and you answer with your voice — no button to push, no key to hold. The mic is open.
The transcript scrolls in real time on the side of the screen so you can see what the interviewer asked and what you have said so far. Webcam is optional and off by default; you can enable it if you want the realism of a video call (the model does not look at the video — it is for you).
If you need to skip a question, you can; the report will note it. If your mic cuts out, you can rejoin from the dashboard — sessions stay open until you end them.
Step 3: Get follow-ups based on what you said
This is the piece that matters. The interviewer is reading your transcript in flight. If your DSA answer hand-waves the time complexity ("it is roughly logarithmic"), it asks you to derive it. If your system-design answer skips operational concerns (monitoring, on-call, deploys), it asks how you would run the system. If your behavioral answer is heavy on what the team did and light on what you did, it asks for your specific contribution.
The follow-ups end when you have given a complete answer or when it is clear you cannot — the interviewer does not loop forever on a topic you do not know. It moves on, and the report later flags the gap.
Step 4: End the session, get a scored report
When you click End session, the model takes 10–30 seconds to generate the report. You land on the report page, which has:
- Overall score (0–10) and verdict (strong-hire, hire, no-hire, strong-no-hire).
- Four-axis radar chart: technical depth, system design, communication, role fit. Each axis has a score, written evidence (quoting your transcript), and gaps (what would have made it stronger).
- Strengths and weaknesses as bulleted lists.
- Best answer and worst answer, each flagged by turn index with a one-line explanation of why.
- Per-question coaching for every answer you gave: what was good, what was missed, and a one-paragraph ideal-answer summary.
- Study plan: a short list of concrete next steps (read this paper, drill this problem class, rehearse this story).
Step 5: Iterate — retake or share
Two productive next moves from the report page:
Retake. The retake button reuses the same role, JD, and resume. Run the session again — same setup, fresh questions — and watch the score climb as you internalise the gaps from the first attempt. We see users add 1–2 points to their overall score across two retakes for the same setup.

Question types covered
The interviewer is steered by the JD you upload, but it knows the standard genres so it can blend them appropriately for the role:
Technical depth. Data structures and algorithms, language deep-dives (Go, Rust, TypeScript, Python, Java), debugging walk-throughs, concurrency and memory model questions. Suited to the engineering rounds of an SWE or platform loop.

Behavioral. Disagreements with senior engineers, projects that slipped, hardest tradeoffs, giving and receiving hard feedback, leading without authority. Suited to the behavioral round of any role.
Role-fit and negotiation. Why this team, why now, what the first 90 days look like, the most surprising thing about the JD, salary expectations and counters. Suited to the hiring-manager and recruiter rounds.
Engineering interviews are the most battle-tested. Product, design, data science, and SDET roles work — the interviewer reads the JD — but the engineering question banks are the deepest.
The scoring rubric — how each axis is calculated
The four axes are not arbitrary. They map to what real interviewers actually grade:
Technical depth (0–10)
Measures how well you reason about correctness, complexity, and trade-offs in your domain. The score is driven by: did you arrive at a correct solution; did you analyse complexity correctly; did you discuss trade-offs (time vs space, latency vs throughput, simplicity vs scalability); did you handle the follow-ups; did you make claims you could not back up.
The evidence section quotes specific lines from your transcript. The gaps section names what would have moved the score up.
System design (0–10)
Measures how well you scope a problem, propose a baseline, and discuss scaling, failure modes, and operational concerns. The score is driven by: did you ask clarifying questions; did you propose a clean baseline; did you discuss data modeling, API surface, and failure modes; did you address scale, observability, and on-call; did you reason about trade-offs.
For non-system-design sessions, this axis still appears in the report but with a lower weight in the overall score.
Communication (0–10)
Measures how clearly you explained your thought process, structured your answers, and recovered when stuck. The score is driven by: did you signal where you were in your thinking; did you avoid filler and tangents; did you summarise before moving on; did you handle interruptions gracefully; did you stay coherent under pressure.
This is the axis that ESL speakers and fast-talkers most commonly under-score on, even when their technical answers are correct.
Role fit (0–10)
Measures how well your experience and motivation map to the specific JD. The score is driven by: did your answers reference the actual JD; did you connect your past projects to the target role; did you show curiosity about the team; did you avoid generic answers that could apply to any role.
Role-fit scoring is the part most candidates ignore in their own prep, and it is often what tips a hire/no-hire borderline call.
Honest comparison — InterviewLab vs the alternatives
vs ChatGPT as an interviewer
ChatGPT can roleplay an interviewer if you ask. It is text-first, has no built-in interview clock, and will not push back on a weak answer unless you specifically prompt it to. The ChatGPT voice mode improved this in 2024 — the conversation flow is closer to a real interview now — but it still has no sense of role-fit, no scored rubric, and no per-question coaching report. A day-in-the-life prep cycle for a FAANG SWE interview
This is the workflow we recommend for the week before a typical FAANG software engineering loop, assuming a five-day window. Adjust the cadence to your own life. The goal is to walk into the real loop having done five mock interviews of varying types, with measurable improvement across them.
Day 1 — calibration session. Run a 30-minute medium-difficulty session against the actual JD. Do not study first. The point is to find out where you are. Look at the report. The four-axis radar will be lopsided in some specific way; that is your weakness pattern.
Day 2 — first weak axis. Whichever axis scored lowest, spend 90 minutes studying it (textbook, articles, problems), then run a 30-minute session focused on that axis. Read the report; rerun if there is time.
Day 3 — second weak axis. Same pattern, second-lowest axis.
Day 4 — system design deep dive. Even if it is not your weakest axis, system design is the round most candidates under-prepare for. Run a 60-minute system design session at hard difficulty. Take the report into a long study session.
Day 5 — full mock loop. Run two sessions back to back: a 45-minute technical and a 30-minute behavioral. Treat the gap between them as the real ten-minute break in a loop. Do not look at the report between them; only look after both.
Day 6 — retake the calibration. Same JD, same difficulty as Day 1. Watch the score move. The delta is the answer to "am I ready."
Day 7 — interview day. Sleep. Reread your strongest answers from the previous reports as a confidence-builder. Do not study new material the morning of.
This cycle compresses to three days if you only have three days, and stretches to two weeks if you have two weeks. The structure — calibrate, drill the weak axes, full mock, retake the calibration to confirm progress — is the same.
Using the share link productively
The share link feature is one of the parts users tell us makes the biggest difference, but the workflow is non-obvious. Three patterns we see working:
With a coach. Run a session, share the link before your weekly call, and walk in with concrete questions: "the rubric flagged my system-design answer at 6.2 — here is the transcript — what would you have said about the queue back-pressure problem?" Privacy and data
What InterviewLab stores: your resume and JD text (so you can reuse them across sessions), the transcript of each session (so the report can cite what you said), the generated feedback report, and your Google email for sign-in. Audio is transcribed in flight and is not retained as a recording — only the text transcript persists. Sessions are private by default; only you can see them.
